1971 Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri

Ballad of a Razor Blade
Flowers on the mantle strewn in careless disarray
In the midst of life a young girl's quietly gone away.
Screaming protests out the window
Lighting wetted fires
Young girl saw the plaster faces
Faced the plaster liars.

Rumpled sheets upon the mattress waiting to be made
Lights on round the house as if up through the night she'd stayed.
Crying to the silent mirror
Turning to the wall
Young girl lost the help she wanted
Waited for them all.

Tear-stained stationary on the desk, a note half done
Open razor in the bathroom, glinting in the sun.
Looking towards the darkened sunlight
Gasping to the air
Young girl thought she'd always known him
Found he never cared.

Dark red liquid smeared across the bathroom walls and floor
Limpid body crooked-twisting laid out by the door.
Livid gashes from the fair wrists
Face a sad mistake
Gave too much to he who tricked her
Death was all she'd take.
