Amour Prope

You sometimes wonder
If it wasn't a blunder
That someone invented
Amour Prope.

If men didn't rate
Themselves to be great
We'd discard the phrase
Amour Prope.

I guess it's just common practice,
For self-esteem to become conceit.
If the world disregarded the custom,
It would stand as an earth-shaking feat.

Loyalty to self
Is man's fullest wealth
So I conclude we need
Amour Prope.

Man would lose sanity
If he were denied vanity
We'll have to keep
Amour Prope
