"Another
Candle on an Overloaded Cake"

Putting
another candle on an
already overloaded birthday cake...
In the beginning,
the additions were
craved, almost as much as the cake
Turn out
the lights, except for the candles
smiling faces reflected in the bath of chocolate glow
Childhood,
youth, and young manhood
flee from the intermittent lives of millions
But it is
this fleeting youth which was recorded
by the snuffing of so many candles for so long
This fleeting
young manhood which
failed to record pensive thoughts,
youthful reverie, and prudent observation
This fleeting
mindset which
causes everything to look so used
and wrinkles to appear on smooth hands
The wicks
burn out,
the candles melt into nothingness,
and the cakes can't be eaten and saved
at the same time
Till another
year passes indiscriminately
the millions savor attention and scrutiny
this life reflects again
writing yet another verse
celebrating
the loss of innocence,
youth,
and optimism
Someday
the cake will
not be able to hold
any more candles
