"Repetition Roundelay"
Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri

As the scattered leaves whoosh past my perogatives
As the sands of time fall through the glass with ease
As the half forgotten memories wash sullen over my existence
There is naught a fulsome notion to appease

Was it only yesterday, or last month, or a month gone by?
Was it years or decades lost, when fulfillment knocked?
Was my reality even solid, as I chased the shadows into corners?
When did the door to ecstasy become permanently locked?

The merry go round goes merrily on,
around and round and round
The multitudes cry and laugh and shout
But they really make not a sound
One day I'm happy, ecstatic, fulfilled
And the next I am rainy and cold
The others are gone and the rent is past due
And the family's far from the fold

As the questions, those same questions get asked again
As the answers only appear in disappearing ink
As the futility of the repetitious roundelay gets repeated
And feelings flutter faster than I can think

Was there ever a plan on my datebook of life?
Were these months supposed to fly by so fast?
Will I ere have the time to succeed once again?
Do I possess any legacy felt fit to last?

Yes, the merry go round just goes merrily on,
departure and destination the same
The multitudes cry and laugh and shout
There's really nobody and nothing to blame
Depression's a friend, fickle, fallow, sublime
Time is the enemy, sooth
The hourglass is empty, the sands are now still
Only memory remains of wasted youth.
