"Internet
Wasteland"
Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri

It can take
a while to connect sometimes
Digital switches sometimes linger in the off position
too long
causing crashes and curious consternation
then, as if God threw the switch,
the words and the images of cyberspace
appear on the binary telescreen
complete with directories and guidebooks
open to exploration, immersion,
and at times atrophy
News tickers
constantly updating to the minute
News so instant hearsay and misinformation get headlines
The history of entertainment is on paused download
Thousands of spammed pleas, boasts, and schemes
Instant connection with the housebound across the globe
False friendship and false fame,
Forever inviting new converts
