OSCAR NOMINATIONS AND MY CHOICES 2/12/02

I haven't even watched the "ceremony" which my Tivo "recorded" for me this morning. Instead I've been working on the site, insuring that my oscar news and picks are all presented. The full nominations list from www.oscar.com follows. Titles in RED are my original picks for that category if I had one. Titles in BLUE will be the winners if the academy disagrees with me. (What I want to win versus who will probably win.) This was a strange year to call, and there are some surprises.

Performance by an actor in a leading role : Denzel's nom is a surprise to me (and probably most of Hollywood) and since he's one of my fav actors, I've got to put him in there, along with Will Smith. I saw Ali, but not Training Day. Russell might win, however, and I give reasons why on my review of Beautiful Mind.

Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind" (Universal and DreamWorks)
Sean Penn in "I Am Sam" (New Line)
Will Smith in "Ali" (Sony Pictures Releasing)
Denzel Washington in "Training Day" (Warner Bros.)

Tom Wilkinson in "In the Bedroom" (Miramax)

Performance by an actor in a supporting role : If Denzel wins Best Actor, Ali has to win something, and Jon Voight's performance as Cosell is spot on. I know that a lot of people will be pulling for Ian McKellan, and I loved Lord of the Rings, and he was the best thing in the picture (along with the other Ian, Holm, who wasn't nominated for anything.) You will find I'm completely snubbing LOTR in favor of Rouge. Those are the two front runners as far as noms are concerned. (Notice JIm Broadbent is nominated for Iris, the film he won the Globe for, and not Rouge.)

Jim Broadbent in "Iris" (Miramax)
Ethan Hawke in "Training Day" (Warner Bros.)
Ben Kingsley in "Sexy Beast" (Fox Searchlight)
Ian McKellen in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (New Line)
Jon Voight in "Ali" (Sony Pictures Releasing)

Performance by an actress in a leading role : My early favorite was Renee, and Sissy of course won for Coal Miner's Daughter, and on top of that I haven't seen In the Bedroom yet, but I'm positive it'll be Sissy's year for some reason. (And I don't believe Rouge is an Actor's Picture, so am skipping it for any acting nods.)

Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball" (Lions Gate)
Judi Dench in "Iris" (Miramax)
Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge" (20th Century Fox)
Sissy Spacek in "In the Bedroom" (Miramax)
Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones's Diary" (Miramax/Universal/StudioCanal)

Performance by an actress in a supporting role The Gosford roles cancel each other out. Marisa won before. I didn't even know Kate Winslet was in Iris, and it's one of those "single theater" pics. I'm pushing for Jennifer. Funny how there were some real good performances in some stinker movies this year.

Jennifer Connelly in "A Beautiful Mind" (Universal and DreamWorks)
Helen Mirren in "Gosford Park" (USA Films)
Maggie Smith in "Gosford Park" (USA Films)
Marisa Tomei in "In the Bedroom" (Miramax)
Kate Winslet in "Iris" (Miramax)

Art Direction: Grant Major
Set Decoration: Dan Hennah
MOULIN ROUGE (20th Century Fox)
Art Direction: Catherine Martin
Set Decoration: Brigitte Broch

Achievement in cinematography : Deakins did A Beautiful Mind, and I hated the cinematography there, but I feel the Coen's were snubbed, and Man Who Wasn't There was my longshot pick for Best Picture nomination. Here my favorite isn't Rouge, which I think will sweep this year, so Rouge will get this award.

THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE (USA Films)
Roger Deakins

MOULIN ROUGE (20th Century Fox)
Donald M. McAlpine

Achievement in costume design : I guess since Rouge was nominated here, it'll get costumes. But LOTR needs to get something, so it and not Rouge will be my favorite in this category.

THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE (Warner Bros.)
Milena Canonero
GOSFORD PARK (USA Films)
Jenny Beavan
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE (Warner Bros.)
Judianna Makovsky
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (New Line)
Ngila Dickson and Richard Taylor

MOULIN ROUGE (20th Century Fox)
Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie

Achievement in directing : Really problematical category, since I would have wanted Baz Luhrmann in there after all. Since Altman was snubbed by the Director's Guild, and believe it or not has never won Oscar and has only been nominated about 4 times, he's the shoo in for favorite here. My favorite, since he was nominated at all, is Mr. Lynch. This is the director you want.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND (Universal and DreamWorks)
Ron Howard
BLACK HAWK DOWN (Sony Pictures Releasing)
Ridley Scott

Achievement in music in connection with motion pictures (Original song) : Now that I understand Faith Hill is going to sing "There You'll Be" from Pearl Harbor at the show, I should pick that song just because Faith is my favorite singer these days, but I have to admit I have no idea which song will win. They were all pretty forgettable. Too bad they couldn't have nominated the Shrek cast. Probably Sting versus McCartney? I have no favorite, just picked Sting because of the Globe win.
