SUNDAY MONDAY |
The Genesis of TV GuidebookWhen I was 13, in grade school, I created a series of
magazine parodies, including the original TV Guidebook. Although pretty funny
in it’s own right, it was written while living with my parents as a child,
and of course was heavily self censored. At the end of a particularly drug
laced period, which culminated in my dismissal from my profession, and a few
months of unemployment, I exercised my artistic sensibilities, and created the
ultimate magazine parody. I had dreams, once I began constructing AllThingsMike in 1999, to feature
some of my more “artistic” endeavors from the prehistoric time before
computer imaging, and am doing that here, finally, in 2001, with the help of
my new scanner, and better understanding of how things look on the web. Going Crazy in 1977In 1977 I was in the middle of my SouthBay period, one
which was fueled by sex, drugs and rock and roll. The TV Guidebook parody of
1977 is awash in confession type prose disguised as TV listings, of a rampant
hedonistic lifestyle, and lots of the above mentioned vice. I do not regret
this lifestyle, and embraced it fully at the time. That this lifestyle didn’t
seem to set me off a too steep course and into any real or imagined abysses
is good testament to my sense of purpose and to my will power. A lot of
people didn’t survive the period. Parodies on The WebWhenever I view a medium, I see that medium ripe for parody. The web certainly wasn’t any different.. Websites in general and web portals in particular, are fueling my desire for parody, and it seems the web is an interesting parody of itself already. As time and space allows, I truly wish to post anything and everything that truly makes me laugh, and/or chuckle at the state of humanity’s foibles. The Komedy Komedy Komedy section is one of the last to be fully expanded, and with the advent of my “portal page”, Hearsay.com, and the TV Guidebook parody, I hope to attract an audience who thinks the “old NatLamp was funny, yet cringes when confronted with what that humor has wrought in the first year or the 21st century.
